Buried in the trees of Kazakhstan’s sweeping Almaty forest is a cylindrical glass structure designed to help one with spiritual and creative development. At the moment, the four-story greenhouse designed by Architect Aibek Almasov, founder of A.Masow Design Studio, is still in early conceptual phases. Soon, the realized home will be a tranquilizing escape from the bustling of Almaty – Kazakhstan’s largest, most developed and culturally diverse city.

Villa Escarpa

Architect Mário Martins, founder of Mário Martins Atelier, has been molding the contemporary structures of western Algrave, Portugal for the past 20 years. Martins latest addition to the Algrave’s rolling landscape is the Villa Escarpa, a rectangular white structure suspended from the hillside that was inspired by the Bauhaus movement.

What do words like “craft” and “skill” mean in 2011? That is one of the questions that the exhibition ‘Power of Making’ seeks to answer. This film delves into the working lives of four makers: shoe designer Marloes ten Bhömer, crochetdermist Shauna Richardson, artist, curator and glass designer Matt Durran and flute-maker Stephen Wessel. It uncovers processes of thought and making that are as fascinating, complex and contemporary as the exhibition itself.

A collaboration between Sam Lubell, the West Coast editor of the Architect’s Newspaper, and Douglas Woods, author of last year’s Classic Homes of Los Angeles, the tome brings together seven decades of work by the late New York–born photographer.
