Dutch office Studio MAKS has built a compact concrete house in an old industrial area of Deventer, the Netherlands, for a young couple on a tight budget. Deventer House is situated on a plot of land surrounded by the old harbour warehouses of the inland city on the IJssel river. Here, young people have been given land to build their own homes.

2001 revives house in Bandoubashi, an abandoned property in Japan

2001 —a Tokyo based architecture studio—has taken on a renovation project of a house for rent in Yokohama, Japan. The 50-year-old wooden structure was left in ruins; the roofs had collapsed, exterior walls were broken, floors and ceilings were in poor conditions. In such circumstances, animals and plants started invading every corner. Even though the space was full of wilderness, 2001 still saw beauty and potential for renovation– the project was eventually known as the House in Bandoubashi.

US firm Chen + Suchart Studio has renovated and expanded a 1930s dwelling in Phoenix, Arizona, adding a metal-clad volume with a window wall and a pointy roof. Called the Escobar Renovation, the project entailed updating and enlarging an existing home in the city’s downtown area.

Sculptural living space: House of Rolf uses reconstituted materials to dramatic effect

Dutch architect and designer Rolf Bruggink’s latest project, House of Rolf, is a renovated 19th century coach house with a modern interior made entirely out of reconstituted materials from a separate building on the same piece of land. With the help of fellow architect and designer Niek Wagemans, who also created a furniture piece for the property (part of his series ‘confused furniture’), Bruggink set about building House of Rolf from a rough scale model, developing and amending the design as the construction phase progressed.

Fran Silvestre Arquitectos has shared their most recent residential project which simultaneously contrasts and responds to its green environment in Paterna, Valencia. ‘House Between the Pine Forest’ belongs to a family of several generations; the architecture of the original residence became inconsistent due to the culmination of interventions that had taken place over the years using different construction systems.

Dandelions are used to make medicine within this timber and concrete complex that architects office Archihood WXY has built in South Korea. Called Korean Dandelion Farm, the small complex is located on the edge of a forest. It combines a production centre for herbal remedies with a peaceful visitor retreat.

The 3,500 sq. ft. home is located in Redondo Beach, one block from the Pacific Ocean. The simple massing is accentuated by articulated openings, situated and designed to frame views of the surrounding mountains and ocean. The geometry used to create the system of apertures continues throughout the interior. Surfaces of pattern and openings define zones of circulation and living spaces.
