The Pacific Coast Paradise of Sibling Retreats Cuixmala and Hacienda de San Antonio

Not far from the jet-setter’s playground Careyes, splendidly remote Cuixmala brings first-class hospitality to a 25,000-acre biosphere. Photographer Douglas Friedman captures the wildlife haven and its sister property, Hacienda de San Antonio, a 19th-century estate situated at the foot of an active volcano three hours inland from the Pacific coast. “When you arrive on the beach when there’s no one around and you have an exquisite meal, that’s the definition of luxury to me,” says Alix Goldsmith Marcaccini, the current owner along with her husband Goffredo.

Holidays designed to enjoy England’s scenic countryside have moved far beyond a desolate muddy camping ground with communal cold showers. Glass put ‘glamping’ and ‘green’ together and found that ‘sustainable’ and ‘luxury’ go hand in hand. Designed to reduce our carbon footprint, Glass also found that these country escapes made fine candidates for the future of modern, sustainable living.

Not far off the Pacific coast in the Costa Rican jungle, a community has taken to the trees to craft a new, sustainable life off the grid and away from urbanity. Finca Bellavista is a community of long-term residents and travel guests housed in a network of tree houses built right into the rain forest canopy. Perched above the forest floor, these tree houses are connected by zip lines and sky bridges, accessible by stairs and ladders from the ground level.

Francis Mallmann’s Uruguayan Hotel is a Calm Culinary Paradise

Chef Francis Mallmann’s move to Uruguay’s rustic Garzón has transformed the one-time ghost town into a jetset hideaway. In 2004, the acclaimed Latin American culinary talent eschewed the glitz of his 1884 and Los Negros establishments (located in Mendoza and José Ignacio, respectively) to open El Garzón, a boutique hotel and epicurean restaurant.
