A treetop tour of the American architect’s Californian abode

A modern masterpiece of glass and redwood, the home of architect Ray Kappe is often referenced as one of the greatest residences in Southern California. Designed as a family home some 50 years ago, chez Kappe is an exquisite tree house that sits amidst sycamore and eucalyptus on a hill in LA’s Rustic Canyon. It looks much the same today as it did a half-century ago—a contemporary extension of the early SoCal glass-house tradition, begun decades earlier by architects like Rudolph Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and Harwell Hamilton Harris.

The artist couple invite us into their tranquil Mérida hideaway

Mérida is a picturesque city in the Mexican state of Yucatán. Little over a century ago, it was one of the richest cities in the world, due to the export of henequen, a local agave plant used to make rope. Its past glory is still evident in dilapidated limestone mansions that are being increasingly refurbished into stylish properties by artists, architects and contemporary bohemians, driving a cultural revival of the city.

The street artist’s ode to Brazil’s forgotten community, the Guaraní

“We are all products of the chaos that surrounds us,” says Portuguese street artist Alexandre Farto – aka Vhils – in André Santos’s film, which documents the indigenous village of Araçaí, Brazil, where 90 Guaraní people were moved by the government at the turn of this century, displacing them from their ancestral lands. Immortalizing these forgotten people, Farto carves their portraits onto buildings and the doors of their homes – mixing indigenous and new techniques – giving them the voice and dignity they have been denied.

In “Two Islands”, the second of four episodes of “My Road Series”, pro-surfer Nic von Rupp shares his perspective of the Hawaiian surf scene. He starts at the busy and active North Shore to then move to the neighbor island of Maui where he visits a laid back hippie town that still holds it’s crowd-less jewels. The contrast between these two islands and it’s stories is what sets the tone for this informal documentary.
