line-height: 1pt\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><br \/>\nDesigned by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu, <em>Monocle Scent One: Hinoki<\/em> is truly striking.\u00a0 Its first impression has a tight, woody, herbal effect \u2013 cooling with a piney-camphoraceous quality.\u00a0 Cedar and cypress mix with oakmoss, and a contrast exists between hard, icy green lines and the rather warm, sweet effect of polished blonde woods.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-245\" title=\"cdg_scent_hinoki_1_1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whatwedoissecret.org\/madebyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cdg_scent_hinoki_1_1.jpg?w=600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>As if wiping steam off a plate glass window, the fragrance opens into a beautiful expanse, with a purity that recalls still, glassy fresh water \u2013 I emphasize <em>fresh<\/em> water as it is not at all aquatic.\u00a0 The design of this fragrance was inspired by the woody smell of Japanese ofuro (bathhouses) and Scandinavian forests.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, they\u2019ve hit the nail on the head perfectly here.<\/p>\n<p>There is something soothing &#8211; almost meditative &#8211; about this fragrance, recalling clear skies and calm arctic evenings. \u00a0 Maybe a result of the slightly medicinal effect of camphor, perhaps from the soft laundry-like scent of Iso E Super (used to impart woody notes, and often used in detergents).\u00a0 Either way, <em>Monocle Scent One: Hinoki<\/em> feels like fresh snow in an infinite forest, hushed by the warmth of powder-soft cashmere.\u00a0 The dry down presents an earthy-smokiness &#8211; an extinguished campfire with a touch of incense.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-275\" title=\"hinoki bath mat\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whatwedoissecret.org\/madebyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/hinoki-bath-mat.jpg?w=600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>To top it off, the strong lines and minimal woods are a nice olfactive nod to Monocle\u2019s visual and philosophical aesthetic:\u00a0 Clean and to the point, yet complex, interesting, and truly international.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-267\" title=\"monocle-shop-nyc-inside-02\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whatwedoissecret.org\/madebyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/monocle-shop-nyc-inside-02.jpg?w=600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Set foot in the Monocle shop on Hudson Street in Manhattan\u2019s West Village, and the scent of <em>Hinoki<\/em> will envelop you.\u00a0 For many it\u2019s just a pleasant aroma, but for some, the smell conjures up powerful memories &#8211;
