The city of Guthrie is a small rural community in southern Kentucky that once played a significant role in the expansion of the country’s transportation network in the early 1900’s through the construction of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad line. After a period of economic decline, the city has recently been the focus of renewal efforts to revive its downtown core.

The Villa Boréale is a charming contemporary residence located in Charlevoix, an eastern region of the Quebec Province well known for its wooded valleys, skiable mountains and breathtaking points of view. At the heart of the boreal forest, the Villa is set on a sloped and private site, matching up nicely with the ubiquitous vegetation of the surroundings.

Nestled into a forested slope along the eastern edge of the Case Inlet, this small retreat opens to a western view of the Olympic Mountains and the Puget Sound. Anchored by a weathered cedar clad bedroom wing, a bold concrete cantilever projects the living and dining into the forest and toward the view.

Beijing-based architecture and design studio reMIX designed a shutter-clad extension to a light-filled white home in Beijing. The brief included a garden extension as well as the accommodation of a double-height studio, roof terrace, kitchen garden and projection room.

Sao Paulo-based architecture practice Studio MK27 designed ‘Casa Branca’, a concrete retreat inspired by Brazilian Modernism.
In order to withstand the area’s extreme tropical weather conditions, the minimal two-story structure was created with a combination of wood, concrete and white aluminum. To ensure air ventilation throughout the building, the architects decided on the installation of sliding doors with wooden slats.

A mature fir tree would be enclosed at the centre of this conceptual tubular glass house by Kazakh architect Aibek Almassov, which may finally become a reality now that potential investors have been found. Tree in the House is designed by Almassov of A Masow Architects as an inverted treehouse, intended to provide an escape from the “sweltering concrete boxes” of city life.
